Vets say war is terrible

Editor’s note: Some of the stories and photographs shared by Gothenburg veterans in the following story appeared in Hero Flight 2016, a special supplement to the Lexington Clipper-Herald. Bob Theasmeyer of Gothenburg, an Army squad leader, was in Vietnam for only 38 days.

Yet excerpts of his story in a landing zone reveal why he received a Purple Heart.

“When a fire fight starts, almost instantly everyone gets into it. That’s what happened that day. I swore it lasted five hours but it was probably only two minutes. Rounds came back at us and I just happened to be in the way. I got hit; nobody else in the squad got hit.
