Valiant effort by Junior Melons

COZAD—In the double elimination area tournament the Junior Melons had to bounce back after losing to Aurora on July 9, 15-8. They hammered Cozad on Monday, 11-1, to earn a chance to avenge their loss in the championship game against Aurora. Gothenburg had to take two games from their opponents to be the champs. On July 11 the two teams squared off on a hot, humid afternoon.

It was a low scoring affair for the first few innings as both teams had solid performances by their pitchers. Aurora was able to score one in the first followed by another run in the second. Gothenburg evened up the score in the fifth with an RBI ground out by Jacob Barkmeier. The Melons did not allow them to score again until the bottom of the sixth inning when Aurora put up seven.

The Junior Melons could not overcome the deficit, though they tried by adding two runs for a 9-4 loss.

Conner Baker led the way for the Melons as he had two hits and one run batted in. Baker and Kristofer Pearson each had a double.

Carlos Magdaleno started the game pitching for Gothenburg. He threw for four and one-third innings giving up three hits and two runs, with four walks and five strikeouts. Matt Zimbelman came in to pitch the next one and one-third innings. He gave up one hit and seven runs, walked four and struck out three. Barkmeier came in to close the game out. He pitched for two-thirds of an inning and gave up only one hit.

The Junior Melon’s loss concluded a fantastic season with much improvement from the previous years.

“As far as the season goes, this is the best season the Junior Program has had in quite awhile,” said Coach Fecht.
