Melons defeat Overton 23-14

Seniors open season with a big win

OVERTON—It took the Gothenburg Senior baseball team a couple of innings to get rolling in their season opener at Overton Friday night.

Once they did, though, the Melons were hard to stop.

Behind 2-0, Gothenburg didn’t score until the top of the third inning when singles by Brandon Wlasiuk, Cody Ostergard and Ben Mayher led to three runs.

The Gothenburg advantage lasted only a short time as Overton put together a five-run inning to go up 7-3.

A three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning by Landen Haake sparked the Melon offense.

With Cody Ostergard and Tre Ostergard on base, Haake hit the ball over the fence.

Brady Preitauer singled to start things rolling again, advancing to second on a passed ball.

When Mayher followed up by reaching on an error at third base, Preitauer turned the play into a run and Mayher advanced to second.

On a full count with two outs, Korey Ahlenstorf walked. A single by Taylor Walker drove in Mayher and Ahlenstorf gambled for the score. Gothenburg ended the inning up 9-7.

Overton didn’t go away, scoring a pair of runs on three hits and one error to tie 9-9 going into the fifth inning.

Overton regained the lead after five innings, outscoring Gothenburg 4-3 in the fifth. It was the last time the Melons would trail.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Cody Ostergard walked, Tre Ostergard singled and Haake walked to load the bases for Preitauer.

A fielding error at second allowed Preitauer to get on base, scoring both Cody and Tre while advancing Haake to third.

Haake scored on another Overton error that pushed Preitauer to third base.

A triple by Mayher scored Prei-tauer and Mayher ran home on the next play when Ahlenstorf singled. The inning ended on a ground out to the pitcher with Gothenburg leading 17-13.

Haake powered the Melons again in the seventh inning with a two-RBI triple as Gothenburg scored six runs on two hits and three errors.

The Seniors scored their final run of the game when Ahlenstorf stole home with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

Tre Ostergard spent nearly five innings on the mound with Haake getting the win in relief.

Now 1-0, Gothenburg travels to Lexington Wednesday (today) before hosting Hershland on Saturday and the same Lexington team Sunday.
