Juniors searching for first victory

Melons shut out by McCook 14-0.

McCOOK—Gothenburg struggled to get on base on the road against the McCook First Central Bank Juniors.

With four hits, five errors and no runs, the Melons fall to 0-6 on the year after suffering a 14-0 shutout at McCook on June 9.

Only three Melon base runners got past second base and all three were left stranded.

Ben Tiedemann singled in the first inning and moved to second on a base hit by Trent Good.

Tiedemann stole third but his chances to score were doused when the next two batters popped out.

Caleb Geiger got on base with a walk in the second inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Kolton Barnes. He got into scoring position on a passed ball but was left standing when Justin Larson got out on a throw from shortstop to first.

Jeff Rodriguez was the only other Melon to see third base. He walked in the top of the fourth inning and advanced to second on a single by Geiger.

A ground out by Barnes to McCook’s first baseman allowed Rodriguez to get to third but his opportunities to score ended with an infield blooper picked up by McCook’s pitcher.

At the same time the Melon bats were quiet, Gothenburg’s defense struggled to hold McCook out.

The First Central Bank team scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, five in the third and two in the fourth to end the game early on a 10-run rule and give the McCook Juniors their first win of the season.

Tiedemann finished with two hits while Good and Geiger each added one.

Larson, Chase Ostergard and Good all spent time on the mound in the losing effort.

The Melons got a game started against Kearney County on Friday but it was cut short by rain after two innings.

The completion has not yet been scheduled.

Gothenburg travels to Ogallala Wednesday (tonight) and is on the road at Broken Bow Saturday before hosting Holdrege Sunday afternoon. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
