Two-student gain boosts enrollment

District 20 opened school doors Tuesday.

Enrollment rose slightly when Gothenburg Public School students reported for the first day of classes Tuesday morning.

Two more students were added to this year’s roster compared to last year, boosting enrollment to 912 compared to 910 on the first day in 2009.

“It’s not a very firm number,” said superintendent Mike Teahon, noting that students often enroll in and leave the district throughout the month.

Enrollment figures on Friday, Sept. 24, will be more important, Teahon said, as that is when the number of students registered for classes are sent into the Nebraska Department of Education.

State aid allocations are determined from those numbers.

Since 2000, the number of students K-12 has risen steadily at Gothenburg Public Schools except for drops in 2002 and 2003.

By far, the seniors make up the biggest class this year with 84 students compared to 58 last year.

The group of students has been large as the class has advanced through the grades.
