Physician assistant says medicine fits
Meyer seeing patients in Gothenburg, Brady.
Ever since she was a young child, Christina Meyer knew she would grow up to work in the medical field.
Exactly where she fit wasn’t always so apparent.
“I changed my mind several times,” she said.
When she landed early acceptance in a physician assistant program in Savannah, GA, she knew she was in the right place.
Meyer grew up in Kearney, graduating from high school in 2000. She met her husband Zach, originally from Curtis, while the two were students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Zach was a Marine and when he received an assignment at Camp Pendleton in southern California, Meyer put her undergraduate degree on hold to follow him.
After moving with the military a few times, Meyer found herself in Georgia, where she earned early acceptance into the South University physician assistant program, graduating in 2008 with a bachelor of science degree.
“I wanted to finish schooling before we settled down and started a family,” Meyer said.
Their daughter Madison is 8 months old and Meyer is five months into her first PA position.
“Family medicine gives me a broad range of patients,” Meyer said. “I like building relationships with patients and I appreciate being part of their care.”
There is a limited number of duties a physician assistant cannot perform, including surgery.
“Basically, I see my own patients, make my own diagnosis and write my own prescriptions,” she said. “I just have to have an over-riding physician.”
