Golf team builds around experience
Three letter winners return.
Every high school coach would love to have a loaded roster of experienced players coming back year after year.
Unfortunately, that’s not how high school sports often work. Players learn, grow and graduate to make room for greenhorn freshmen.
Swede golf coach Jim Henke has a roster of 15 girls heavy with ninth graders.“There’s a lot of inexperience there,” Henke said of his list of players, “but that’s not all bad. It provides more competition among teammates during practice and it only makes them better golfers in the end.”
Three letter winners return to lead the Swedes.
Seniors Anna Boson and Jourdan Matthies and sophomore Heidi Teahon played varsity slots much of last season.
“Naturally we’ll depend on them to lead the way,” Henke said.
New schedule limitations put in place by the Nebraska School Activities Association will make it a little more difficult for Henke’s young girls to gain experience.
He said NSAA has cut back the number of meets golfers can participate in to nine invites and three others such as duals.
“At an invite, only five or six girls get to be involved,” Henke said. “We can put more on the course at a dual.”
But duals are hard to come by and harder to add to a schedule, he said, especially at a course as busy as Wild Horse Golf Club.
So the Swedes’ schedule remains much the same as it has been in years past, with the exception of only one meet on the Gothenburg home course.
