Softball revenge is sweet against Gering, Scottsbluff

Revenge was sweet for Gothenburg with two victories Thursday at Ogallala.

The Swedes beat Gering 9-4 in the opener and then held off Scottsbluff for a 7-5 win. Both Class B teams had beaten Gothenburg earlier this season.

“We were happy to bounce back after we looked so ugly on Tuesday (against St. Paul),” Swede coach Roger Neujahr said. “It was nice to get revenge on Gering and Scottsbluff.”

Big inning powers Swedes

Gothenburg erupted for five runs in the third inning to bust open the game.

Gering (13-11) used a couple of big hits to score two runs in the top of the second. A solo home run, a triple and a sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

Gothenburg responded with a two-out rally that scored a single run in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back singles by Payton Prall and Hanna Wolf along with a Bulldog error produced the run.

The Swedes’ bats came alive in the third with a seven-hit attack. Roni Putnam got things rolling with a lead-off triple and, when the dust settled, Gothenburg led 6-2.

“It was a nice inning,” Neujahr said. “We hit the ball hard.”

The Swedes padded their margin with three more runs in the fourth and then held the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the way.

Jordyn Haake earned the win in relief. Shelby Eggleston and Prall both had three hits.

12 hits fuel 7-5 win

Gothenburg held the Bearcats to just one multi-run inning in the win over Scottsbluff.

Meanwhile, the Swedes plated at least two runs in three different frames.

“We caught Scottsbluff at the right time,” Neujahr said. “They had just played an extra-inning game against McCook.”

Two singles led to a solo run for Scottsbluff (22-7) in the first inning. Gothenburg answered with a pair in the top of the second.

Four singles in five at-bats powered the rally. Hanna Wolf drove in one of the runs.

The Bearcats took a 3-2 lead in the third, but again Gothenburg
