Board votes to replace lights in old gymnasium

Students, staff and visitors will soon be seeing more clearly in Brady school’s old gymnasium.

During a special meeting Sunday afternoon, school board members approved the purchase of a new lighting system for the 1950 gym.

Earlier this month, a ballast in one bank of lights had an electrical problem and was no longer functioning.

Superintendent Bill Porter said the light fixtures are so old that parts are no longer available to fix them.

He also said the old fixtures are not cost effective or energy efficient so replacing all of them will be better for the district in the long run.

The repair will require all new wiring and fixtures as the board agreed to purchase fluorescent lights rather than the same high bay system in the new gymnasium.

Porter said the luminescence and bulb life are equal between the fluorescent system and the high bays but the fluorescents are cheaper.

The board awarded the contract to Joe May of Brady at a cost of $10,600 to be paid from the building fund.

The other system would have cost more than $18,600.

Work will start over the holiday break and is expected to be complete by Jan. 3.
