Child dead; mother, boyfriend charged
Couple accused of child abuse resulting in death.
A 3-year-old Gothenburg child is dead.
Her mother and the mother’s boyfriend have been charged with child abuse resulting in death.
Doris Herrin, 27, and Adam Jesseph, 24, 202 Ave. B, were arraigned Monday in Dawson County Court when county judge Carlton Clark set the bond for each at 10% of $500,000, or at $50,000.
The couple was arrested in North Platte on Christmas Eve following the results of an autopsy on Misty Herrin Schultz conducted last Thursday.
Court records show that the autopsy confirmed massive hemorrhaging of Misty’s brain and retinas.
A pediatrician who specializes in child abuse cases said the child suffered injuries consistent with shaking, a court official said.
While Herrin and Jesseph allegedly reported that Misty had fallen and hit her head in a bedroom, court records show that the treating physician said a fall didn’t cause the injury that led to Misty’s death.
Local police chief Randy Olson said Herrin and Jesseph brought an unresponsive toddler into Gothenburg Memorial Hospital’s emergency room at 1:35 p.m. on Dec. 21.
At 2:46 p.m., Olson said Misty was transported by AirCare to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney where she underwent emergency surgery for a brain injury.
The Gothenburg Police Department, with the assistance of Kearney police officers, began investigating the incident as possible child abuse.
On Dec. 22, Olson said Misty was removed from life support and pronounced dead at 2:44 p.m.
Olson said Herrin and Jesseph were arrested by North Platte police officers and taken into custody without incident. At 6:30 p.m., they were booked into the Dawson County Jail.
When child abuse was first suspected, the police chief said Misty’s 7-year-old sister was placed into protective custody with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Clark appointed the public defender’s office to represent Herrin and Jesseph.
The couple’s preliminary hearing has been set for Tuesday, Jan. 4.
