Disappointing loss to Indians
Last-second play falls short.
BROKEN BOW—After building a nine-point lead on a quick bucket to start the fourth quarter, Gothenburg’s boys watched their road game against Broken Bow drift slowly away.
Little by little the Indians chomped away at the deficit until they were ahead 36-32 with six seconds left in the game.
Individual points, rebound totals and even the final score of 39-35 do little to tell the story of the game.
One number says it all, said coach Roger Koehler.
“Twenty-six turnovers. That says it all,” Koehler said. “We did not take care of the ball well at all.”
Gothenburg started the game strong with a 10-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
“We passed the ball well and got some good shots,” Koehler said.
Things fell apart for the Swedes in the second quarter, though, as Gothenburg scored only two points to trail 15-12 at halftime.
“We came out in the third and did some things well,” the coach said. “Then we went to pieces again in the fourth.”
When Dockweiler hit his three-pointer with just a handful of seconds left to make the score 36-35, Koehler thought there was still hope to pull it out.
“But we took too long to foul,” he said.
The Swedes sent Indian senior Nathan Scott to the line with three seconds left and he hit one of two free throws.
