Ainsworth makes run in overtime

The Gothenburg girls managed only one point in overtime Friday night as the Ainsworth Bulldogs handed the Swedes a 57-48 loss in the final game of the regular season.

“We kept hearing that Ainsworth had two quality shooters,” said Swede coach Tim Peterson. “They proved it.”

Gothenburg came out strong in the first quarter and continued to hold the edge throughout the first half. The Swedes led 33-23 at halftime.

Then the same Achilles heel that has hampered the girls all season showed up again in the third quarter.

Gothenburg managed only one bucket in the period, a field goal by Ali Clark with time running out.

That allowed the Bulldogs to get back in the game. Three three-pointers in the third quarter brought Ainsworth to within one point at 35-34.

“They hit some three-pointers and that allowed them to get into a rhythm,” Peterson said of Ainsworth’s third period play. “They gained some confidence and we’re not the kind of team that can afford to take a quarter off.”

A battle ensued in the fourth quarter
