GHS choir invited to sing at state capital
Gothenburg High School’s chorus was recently chosen to sing in the state capital rotunda by the Nebraska Music Educator’s Association.
The chorus, made up of 89 students, will perform Thursday, March 3, at 12:30 p.m.
GHS choral director Ernie Blecha said the association selects choirs and performing groups each year to showcase their talents in the rotunda as part of “Music in our Schools Month” which is March.
After thinking whether or not the choir was capable of being selected for such an honor, Blecha decided they were.
The chorus then made a CD of two selections which he sent it to the NMEA president. Blecha recently learned the chorus was chosen.
“I am thrilled to have been selected and the kids are very excited about the day also,” he said. “We’ve been working diligently trying to get the music ready to show those in attendance that Gothenburg does indeed have a tremendous high school choir.”
Blecha shared a part of the selection letter which read: “We all know the importance of music in our schools and what better way to show it than to perform at our state’s capitol building for our state senators and others in attendance.”
The music teacher said he believes the chorus is very capable of making Gothenburg proud and encourages the community to attend the concert.
He added that State Sen. John Wightman has been invited.
“I’d very much like to see many familiar faces in the audience that day,” Blecha said. “I believe it is such a unique venue for the students to sing in and an experience they will remember for some time.
“I’m also anxious to hear our choir in such a live acoustical environment.”
