Dawson County gears up for annual fair
4-H activities begin Saturday.
The annual Dawson County Fair officially kicks off Saturday.
The fair is July 15-24.
A carnival opens Friday, July 15, in the evening and continues every evening through Saturday, July 24.
Family night is Wednesday evening.
Also that evening at 6:30 p.m., Gothenburg clog dancers will be featured at the grandstands.
Throughout the fair, vendors will be lined up in the commercial building who will sell merchandise and offer information on agencies such as the Dawson County Parent-Child Center.
A long-standing restaurant at the fair—the 4-H Cafe—will be open Wednesday, July 20, from 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday, July 21-23, from 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 24 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
Events beginning on Friday and the rest of the week at the Dawson County Fairground in Lexington include:
Friday, July 15: 9:30 a.m.—4-H superintendent’s meeting at 4-H exhibit building for family & consumer science related and other miscellaneous static exhibits; 4-H superintendent’s meeting at 4-H Cafe; 10:30-11 a.m.—State 4-H horse-show bound exhibitors may enter static exhibits; 1 p.m.—set up shooting sports equipment.
Saturday, July 16: 9 a.m.—9 a.m. 4-H shooting sports in Stevens arena; 1 p.m.—Take down shooting equipment and set up for dog show.
Sunday, July 17: 6:30 p.m., stock car races at grandstand.
Monday, July 18: 1 p.m.—Livestock area set up.
Tuesday, July 19: 8 a.m.-9 p.m.—Set up commercial displays; 3-5 p.m.—Branding at Stevens arena; 6-9 p.m.; 6:30-7 p.m.—Calcutta/cattle sorting at Stevens arena.
Wednesday, July 20: 8-1 p.m.—Enter open class in open class building; 9 a.m.-1 p.m.—Enter all 4-H food, miscellaneous and home environment static exhibits (except livestock & small animals); 1 p.m.—Judge all static 4-H and open class exhibits; 3-5 p.m.—Branding at Stevens arena; 4-8 p.m.—Lions Club Mobile Screen Unit at grandstands; 5 p.m.—Enter 4-H dogs; 6 p.m.—4-H dog show; 6-10 p.m., open class open to public after judging is complete, commercial exhibits open; 6-8 p.m., Lexington Volunteer Fire Department tornado and fire simulator at grandstands; 6:30 p.m.—Gothenburg clog dancers at grandstands; 7 p.m.—Alex Whipple at grandstands; 7:30-9 p.m.—4-H exhibits open to public after completion of judging; 7:45 p.m.—Pioneer Farm Family Awards at grandstands; 8:15 p.m.—The Richards family at grandstands.
Thursday, July 21: 8 a.m.-9 p.m.—All 4-H buildings open; 8-10:30 a.m., enter 4-H bucket calves and feeder calves; 8 a.m.-noon—Enter 4-H beef, dairy, meat goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine; 12:30 p.m.—4-H bucket calf show, Stevens Arena; 1 p.m.—4-H feeder calf show, Stevens arena; 3-4:30 p.m.—Free root beer floats, Stevens Arena; 4-10 p.m.—Open class exhibits open; 4:30 p.m.—4-H dairy show; 6:30 p.m.—Stock dog competition, Dawson County arena.
Friday, July 22: 8 a.m.—4-H beef show; Stevens arena; 8 a.m.-9 p.m.—All 4-H buildings open; 3-5 p.m.—Branding, Stevens arena; 3-4:40 p.m.—Free watermelon feed, Stevens arena; 4-10 p.m.—Open class exhibits open; 4-9 p.m.—commercial exhibits open; 6 p.m.—4-H sheep lead show (wool garment and lamb), west bleachers Stevens arena; 7 p.m.—Crashfest Demo Derby, grandstand.
Saturday, July 23: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.—All 4-H buildings open; 8 a.m.—4-H swine show; 10:30 a.m.—4-H meat goat show; 10:30-11:30 a.m.—Enter small animals, pets and cats; Noon—Interview and judge small animals, pets, cats and poultry; 1 p.m.—4-H cat show; all events in Stevens Arena; 1-8 p.m.—Open class & commercial exhibits open; 1:30 p.m.—4-H rabbit show, Stevens arena; 2 p.m.—Mutton busting and kids ranch rodeo, Dawson County Arena; 3-5 p.m.—Branding at Stevens arena; 5 p.m.—Release 4-H livestock. family & consumer science, other 4-H exhibits; 6 p.m.—Gates open for concert; 7 p.m.—Randy Rogers Band with opening band by Reggie Shaw, 7 p.m.; 8 p.m.—Release all open-class and commercial exhibits.
Sunday, July 24: 7 a.m.—4-H working horses register; 7:30 a.m.—Enter 4-H horses; 4-H horse show at Stevens arena and Dawson County arena; 9-10 a.m.—Release open exhibits; 9 a.m.-noon, remove commercial displays; 6:30 p.m.—Stock car races, grandstand.
