Armed with gloves and hook, an 84-year-old Gothenburg man won his age division in the Nebraska State Hand Cornhusking contest Oct. 2 in Central City.

Roland Lauer beat the competition in the 75-years-and-older division by picking 169.77 pounds in 10 minutes.

The victory makes him eligible to compete in the national contest in Marshall, MO, this Thursday through Sunday which he plans to do.

Lauer has brought home a national championship trophy twice and has won the state contest around 15 times.

Roland’s grandson, Aaron Lauer of Lincoln, won third place and a plaque in a division for boys 20 years and younger at the state contest.

Aaron, now of Lincoln, is a 2011 graduate of Gothenburg High School.

Next year, both the state and national hand cornhusking contest will be in Central City.
