Swedes defeat Cardinals, Indians.

BROKEN BOW—Things started a little rough for the Gothenburg volleyball team in Broken Bow last week with 15 missed serves and 14 scrambled serve receives in the first game.

After a sluggish start against Doniphan-Trumbull to open the four-team Broken Bow Invite, the Swedes pulled it all together to win the team title.

“We didn’t play as well as we could have against Doniphan-Trumbull,” said coach Mary Clark. “But the girls were determined to win.”

Gothenburg slipped past the Cardinals 27-25 in the first set before falling 25-17.

“It certainly wasn’t our best game,” Clark said, “but the girls had enough moxie to get through it.”

The Swedes took the final set 25-22 and met the Indians in the championship.

Senior Emily Max had 14 kills, 11 digs and three blocks in the first match.

Libero Ali Clark added 28 digs while McKenzie Geiken offered 10 set assists and Kira Peterson and Abby Ambler served for seven points apiece.

Once the Swedes found their rhythm, they did not let up against the Indians.

“We played very well against Broken Bow,” Clark said. “We were serving aggressively and played tough at the net and everything seemed to fall into place like it’s supposed to.”

Gothenburg beat the Indians 25-12, 25-13.

Ambler and Peterson again led the team in service points with 13 and 12, respectively.

Max was 22-of-27 hitting with 12 kills and 10 blocks.
