Learning about renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and recyclables doesn’t have to be boring and dry.

Dudley Elementary kindergartners found that out last Thursday when the Gothenburg High School environmental science class turned them loose on the playground to discover pieces of an environmental awareness puzzle.

The youngsters were treated to a scavenger hunt in which they found pictures and examples of renewable and non-renewable energy sources and recyclables.

Class members and biology teacher Maggie Tiller explained the importance of carefully using non-renewable resources for energy and recycling.

Kindergartner Kooper Koehn said he thought the activity was fun, noting that he learned to “turn off electricity.”

“Sometimes when we leave for a bike ride, my parents leave the TV on,” Koehn said, adding that he was going to remind them to shut it off next time.

Classmate Rebecca Crown said she learned about recycling.

After the scavenger hunt, the kindergartners went inside and colored environmental awareness messages on paper grocery bags that will be available at Peterson’s Supermarket.

Tiller said the class, consisting of Tiffani Maurer, Kendra Karaffa, Alex Spencer and Lance Miesbauer, planned the activities in honor of Earth Day which was April 22.

Last fall, the environmental science class initiated a recycling project in the high school.
