LASWA gets grant to collect household hazardous waste

The Lexington Area Solid Waste Agency (LASWA) has been notified that it is the recipient of a $22,121 grant to conduct household hazardous waste (HHW) collections throughout the agency’s area.

The grant is provided through the NDEQ’s Waste Reduction & Recycling incentive grants program, which is funded by revenue collected on each ton of trash disposed of in the state.

Altogether, the state received 33 eligible grant applications with requests totaling $2,428,593 for solid waste management facilities projects. A total of $1,705,943 was awarded for the 32 projects throughout Nebraska.

Members of LASWA will use the funds to provide household hazardous waste collections across the regions they serve.

Items that will be collected at these household hazardous waste collections will include yard and garden chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, flammables, paints and thinners, auto products, used oil, antifreeze, household products and cleaning chemicals. Mercury and batteries—auto, lead acid and/or rechargeable, titanium, cadmium and nickel halide. Florescent light bulbs, computers and monitors for computers.

Only items from household use will be accepted, no commercial, industrial or farm chemicals. No infectious waste and needles, radioactive waste, asbestos, oil or paint containing PCB’s. No high school labs, appliances, construction waste and tires.

Materials should be delivered to collection sites in sturdy, disposable containers labeled according to contents and no larger than five gallon or 50 pounds. The HHW program reserves the right to reject any materials.

Any questions regarding materials accepted or if anyone is unable to attend the specific time schedule, may contact LASWA at 308-324-3351.

The LASWA is to be commended for their continued efforts to improve Nebraska’s environment through responsible solid waste management activities.

Dates for the events will be announced at a later date.
