Swedes sink rated Sailors
Coach calls Sutherland win mental victory
It seems like it’s been a long time coming, says Gothenburg volleyball coach Mary Clark.
“We’ve been working on the mental part of the game for years.”
Persistence paid off last week when the Swedes took both matches in a home triangular, first handling Southwest 25-17, 25-21 and then beating Sutherland in three sets, 25-16, 15-25, 25-21.
“It was definitely a mental victory for us,” Clark said of the win over the Class D-1 pre-season rated Sailors. “The girls showed some mental tenacity and they did what they needed to do to get the job done.”
Despite a serve receive that struggled at times, Clark said her girls held their composure throughout both matches.
A balanced effort gave Gothenburg the edge over Southwest.
Tiani Reeves recorded seven kills while Jacey Wiggins had six kills and 11 set assists.
Aryn Meisinger picked up eight digs against the Roughriders.
And when the Swedes faced Sutherland in the nightcap, Clark said the team pulled together even more.
“We had a few too many unforced errors in the second set and Sutherland got an edge on us,” Clark said. “But what made me so proud of these girls is they never got tentative. They stayed aggressive, even when things got tight, and they didn’t start tipping to be conservative.”
With the game score tied 1-1 and the third set running point for point, Clark said it was Aryn Meisinger’s serving that finally gave Gothenburg the edge.
“Aryn reeled off a string of great jump serves,” Clark said, “and she managed five straight aces. That was definitely the turning point for us.”
Reeves finished the match with 13 kills on 25-of-32 hitting with three blocks.
Wiggins had 21 set assists and Taylor Mroczek picked up 22-of-28 digs.
