Swedes improve to 9-3 on season
Volleyball team gives best effort in 3-match victory at Hershey
HERSHEY—The Gothenburg volleyball team has played some good sets en route to a 9-3 record on the season.
They haven’t always been consecutive sets, though, said coach Mary Clark.
Gothenburg won three matches in straight sets at the Hershey Invite to take first in the tournament.
“Sometimes we compete against ourselves,” Clark said. “We didn’t do that Saturday. I think it was the overall best team effort we’ve had so far. The girls really took care of our side of the net.”
The Swedes opened with a 25-13, 25-20 win over Bridgeport and came right back with a 25-12, 25-23 victory over Hershey.
“We were able to go to all the different parts of our offense,” Clark said. “We had solid serve receive and serving and our passes were right on.”
The coach said she was a bit concerned about waiting through two matches before playing Ainsworth in the final contest of the day.
“Sometimes the girls can lose a little bit of focus,” she said. “But we came back and played one point at a time until it was over.”
The Swedes pounded Ainsworth 25-15, 25-8 to win the championship.
“We really made some positive steps forward,” Clark said. “The girls allowed themselves to have fun but it was focused fun.”
Sophomore Tiani Reeves had 20 kills in the three matches along with six blocks. Jacey Wiggins added 15 kills and 32 set assists while Aryn Meisinger added 10 ace serves and 30 set assists.
Regan Geiken put down 15 kills and five stuff blocks.
Clark expects the Gothenburg Invite on Saturday to be a good test for the girls.
“Holdrege and Ord are playing very well,” she said. “But our confidence is up and I think we’re ready for the challenge.”
The four-team round-robin tournament begins with Gothenburg playing Ord in the south gym at 11 a.m. while Perkins County faces Holdrege in the north gym.
At 12:15 p.m., the Swedes take on Holdrege in the south gym while Ord plays Perkins County in the north gym.
The final matches of the day pit Gothenburg against Perkins County in the south gym at 1:45 p.m. while Ord and Holdrege play in the north gym.
A championship plaque will be presented based on tournament record.
