UNDER INVESTIGATION: A fire at the Ed Imler home, 1010 18th St., was called in by a watchful neighbor about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to Gothenburg fire chief Mark Ballmer. When fire fighters arrived, Ballmer said heavy smoke was billowing from the basement (see blackened window) where the fire started.
He noted that it took 30 minutes to extinguish the fire. No one was in the home at the time of the blaze, he said, which is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office. Fire fighters were on the scene about four hours. Although the fire was contained to the basement, Ballmer estimated damage at about $25,000 because of heat and smoke throughout the house.
