Swedes sixth at state one acts
Four actors noted for outstanding performances
Although the co-directors of “Hiding in the Open” don’t feel the Swede one-act team performed its best at state B-5 competition Friday, they said it was it was still an honor to be there.
The Swedes finished sixth.“We deserved to be there and the kids not only made the most of the moment, they have the drive to do what we need to do to get there again,” said Lori Long.
Erin Feather described state as “the best of the best” and that the students worked hard and deserved to compete.
“It was an honor to take these kids to this event,” Feather said.
Long said a desire to be within the 30-minute limitation overshadowed the performance.
“I think they were so concerned their nerves got to them,” Long said.
The only drama in the contest (the others were comedies) is a true story about Jewish sisters from Poland hiding in Germany during the Holocaust.
Watching the five other schools on stage inspired Long.
“It reminded me that someone had to get first and someone had to get sixth,” Long said. “And sixth in the state is better than not being there at all.”
She said she’s proud of the students and the play production program and is thankful for the opportunity to guide their talents.
Every year, Long said she and Feather tell the students that the show is theirs.
“The sooner they take ownership, the better the show will be,” she said. “We didn’t have to do that with this group because they owned it from the beginning.”
Feather said the directors were pleased with student effort throughout the season.
Long said there was great leadership within the group, starting with the seniors, and a belief in each other that the directors have not seen in previous teams.
“They were a joy to work with and the seniors will be missed.” she said.
Alliance won the contest with “I’m Not Ebenezer Scrooge” and Milford was runner-up. Other schools were Wayne, third; Omaha Concordia, fourth; and York, fifth.
