Lions select Brady delegates for Cornhusker Boys’, Girls’ State
The Brady Lions Club has selected two high school juniors as delegates to the 2013 Cornhusker Boys’ and Girls’ State in Lincoln in June.
Dalton Simants and Carissa Rayburn will join nearly 800 other high school juniors from across the state participating in the annual citizenship programs, sponsored by Nebraska American Legion and Legion Auxiliary.
The week of activities is designed to provide young people with a better understanding of how city, county and state governments operate.
Each delegate is sponsored locally by an American Legion Post, Legion Auxiliary or some other patriotic, civic, fraternal or religious group in cooperation with the local American Legion post or Auxiliary unit.
The Brady Lions Club has sponsored Brady participants since the close of the local Legion chapter.
Cornhusker Boys’ and Girls’ State is set up as a functional 51st state and each attendee learns how government subdivisions operate by actually doing the job.
Participants campaign for offices, hold elections, take part in band and chorus, compete in athletics and become involved in other various activities as part of the citizenship training program.
Lectures and addresses will be delivered by experienced public officials and professional leaders including Gov. Dave Heineman and Supreme Court Chief Justice John M. Gerard. Motivational speaker JoAnne Owens-Nauslar is also scheduled to address the group
Simants is the son of Becky and Scott Simants of Gothenburg. He is active in football, band and National Honor Society.
Rayburn is the daughter of Bob Rayburn and Tracey Miles. She is active in volleyball, basketball, FCCLA, Student Council, National Honor Society and Quiz Bowl.
