Swede golf focused on returning to state
In her third year coaching the Gothenburg women’s golf team, Tara Foster believes her team is on track for the state tournament.
“Our chance of getting back to state is high if we continue to practice well,” Foster said. “Everybody on the team will have to contribute to better our third place district finish last year.”
The Swedes have two state qualifiers from last year’s team, she said, and that is valuable experience for them as well as the team.
“Our team is already a unified group that gets along and pushes each other to get better daily,” Foster said. “That, and the returners from last season sharing their experience with the younger players is something I appreciate.”
This season is going to be a bit of a rebuilding year she said, with most of the girls having little golf experience.
“We lack depth outside of our top five, and four of those girls are seniors,” Foster said.
Within the conference, the Swedes will face quality opponents in Valentine and Minden, she said, but at meets is where the team will be pushed most.
Foster said the Swedes will play a couple tough tournament early this season and that’s what the team is preparing for now.
“The North Platte Invite and the Lexington Invite will host some good, tough competition,” Foster said. “If McCook is at any of those tournaments, they could be chosen as the favorite.”
To compete at those tougher tournaments, developing team camaraderie will be important this preseason, she said. That, and the short game as a whole.
“Its tough to score well without a quality short game,” Foster said.
Gothenburg only hosts two meets this season: the Gothenburg Invite on Sept. 19, and a dual with North Platte on Sept. 26.
Gothenburg will tee it up for the first time this season at the Kearney Catholic Invite on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 9 a.m. at MeadowLark Hills.
