Seniors anchor Swede attack
One thing the Swedes can take from last year’s 23-7 volleyball season is gained experience.
In her fifth season, head coach Mary Clark knows repeating a record like last year’s will take senior leadership and improvement each day.Clark will count on senior experience this year to lead the team.
“We have a group of three seniors that are great and they provide leadership and energy every day,” Clark said. “Those girls have a lot of varsity experience, more importantly game experience.”
Something the Swedes will do is replace three seniors off that record-breaking team a year ago, Clark said.
“Underclassmen have been working to earn those open spots this preseason,” Clark said. “There has been good competition and staff evaluations on who we think can step up for us.”
Gothenburg has a great group of hitters in Regan Geiken, Taylor Mroczek, Aryn Meisinger and Tiani Reeves returning this season that fit well in the fast-tempo offense, she said.
“The depth and experience those four have is key for our success,” Clark said.
She said this preseason Gothenburg has worked hard on fine tuning its defense and getting the ball to those hitters.
“In volleyball you can’t have a weak spot if you want to be a good team. We must improve our serve receive and passing,” Clark said.
She said if players focus on those areas, then she feels the Swedes could be at the top of the conference standings, but it won’t be easy.
Minden has a lot of talent coming back from last year’s team and they are always tough, Clark said. Ogallala has a good team and they will be up on the conference list as well.
A late addition to this year’s schedule is a match at Grand Island Central Catholic on Sept. 19.
“We want to play great teams to make our team improve,” Clark said. “Playing those teams before the conference tournament will only help us compete.”
She said the ultimate goal this season is qualifying for state by winning the conference tournament and then district.
“We have and will continue to plan practices very carefully to demand constant discipline, all while continuing passion for the game by having fun,” Clark said.
The Swedes open their season Sept. 5 in Broken Bow at 5 p.m.
