Backpack food program to supplement meals
Dudley Elementary is partnering with the Gothenburg Community Foodbank for a Backpack Food Program.
The program, that will provide a backpack filled with nutritious, child-friendly foods to supplement weekend meals, begins Friday, Nov. 15.
How it works is that on Fridays after school, a child from each family will pick up a backpack on the elementary stage that contains grocery items to supplement a family’s weekend meals.
The child returns the backpack, provided at no cost, to the school office Monday so it may be refilled the following Friday.
Officials said the backpack program is not part of the school lunch program and will be facilitated by volunteers from the food bank.
The food bank is located at the American Lutheran Church at 1512 Avenue.
Representatives from the school who will work with volunteers are Jim Widdifield or Allison Jonas at 537-3651 ext. 2. Contact them to answer questions about the program.
Letters about the program will be sent home with Dudley Elementary students this Friday.
Interested families should fill out the form and return it to the elementary office by Monday, Nov. 11.
