Swedes ice-cold in loss to Hershey

It would be an understatement to say the Gothenburg girls basketball team struggled shooting from the field in its 37-15 loss to Hershey on Friday.

The Swedes only made four shots, or 11% of their 35 attempts.

Head coach Chris Lecher didn’t have words to explain the numbers.

“We had some good looks but we couldn’t shoot,” Lecher said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. I don’t know how to explain it.”

Meanwhile, the Swedes defense contained a pretty good Hershey offense in the first half, Lecher said, as Gothenburg trailed 16-5 at halftime.

“They are a pretty good ball club,” he said. “They will probably score 60 points in most of their games.”

Halftime adjustments were made and the Swedes scored nine points in the third quarter but couldn’t cut into the deficit.

“We screened their post defender a few times and got some short shots to fall,” Lecher said

Unfortunately for Gothenburg, its struggles continued as the girls scored just a single point in the fourth quarter.

When the final horn sounded, Lecher said he told the girls that game was over and they weren’t to think about it.

“Our memory chip was removed and stomped on,” Lecher said.

Emily Franzen and Regan Geiken led the Swedes with five points apiece while Taylor Mroczek contributed four points.

Hershey’s leading scorer was Tayler Baker with 13 points.

Gothenburg’s next game against Southern Valley may be an even tougher task on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Lecher said the Eagles are a solid team.

“They have some returners off last year’s team that was good but have lost a few pieces.”

He said the girls will see changes in their shooting drills and changes in speed and focus that will help carry over to the speed of the game.

“I have to put more pressure on our shooters in practice,” Lecher said. “There is going to be someone contesting them every time.”
