Swedes bring home sweepstakes award
Competition stiff at Gering Invite
After a long and exhausting day in Gering on Saturday and a lengthy bus trip home, the Swede speech team was rewarded for its efforts.
Because of the number of medalists and high placement in different events, the team won the sweepstakes award for large schools.
“It was a great day,” said speech team coach Dan Jensen.
Three Swedes stood in the winner’s circle for their respective events and included Kelsey Kuhlman in informative speaking, Carlin Daharsh in poetry and Dylan France in entertainment speaking.
Jensen took half of the speech team to the new venue in Gering, which will host the B6 district, while the other half traveled to the Broken Bow Invite.
“Attending this contest in Gering was a great opportunity for us to learn from judges, teams and coaches from a different circuit that quite often rewards a different style than what we see in central Nebraska,” he explained. “In most events, our kids offered some solid competition and the results were rewarding.”
The team also returned home with ideas about how speeches can be improved for upcoming contests, he said.
Besides Gothenburg, schools competing were Chadron, Minatare, Mitchell, Bayard, Gordon-Rushville, Scottsbluff, Bridgeport, South Platte, Ogallala, Hemingford, Kearney, Alliance, Gering, Banner County and Kimball.
