Irish explode offensively in win over Brady boys

Eagles’ season ends with loss in subdistrict.

Brady couldn’t match the athleticism of the No. 4-rated, Class D-1 North Platte St. Patrick Irish Feb. 25 as the Eagles lost 69-26 in the semifinals of the D1-11 subdistrict tournament.

“They’re a quality ball club,” head coach Dave Jacobs said, “with athletic and strong kids.”

The Eagles had limited offensive production as the Irish defense managed to keep Brady drivers out of the lane a majority of the contest.

Offensively the Irish, led by Mark Mayfield, caught fire early and often.

Mayfield, who led all scorers with 29 points, scored 19 first-quarter points as St. Pat’s jumped out to a 28-8 lead.

Brady’s Troy Lusk provided six points on two three-pointers while Nate Sitorius battled for an inside bucket.

Offensive efficiency continued in the second period for the Irish while struggles hampered Brady.

St. Pat’s outscored the Eagles 16-9 and had a 44-17 lead at the break.

Lusk hit another trey while Austin Widick contributed two baskets in the quarter.

At half Jacobs said he told his players to continue playing hard and enjoying the opportunity to play the game.

“You only get to play so many games,” he said. “You have to make the best of it.”

The third frame resembled the first two as the Irish put up 20 more points while Brady managed only seven.

Trailing 64-24 Brady’s substitutes came in and did some positive things in the final stanza, Jacobs said.

“Those kids went in and played tough. They battled,” he said.

As the game ended, Brady’s season came to a close.

Jacobs said that no team likes to get beat like that but there wasn’t real devastation either.

“I told them I was proud of the way they played,” he said. “They competed and did the best they could in a difficult situation.”

Lusk led the Eagles with 13 points.

St. Pat’s advanced to the D1-6 district final after beating Sutherland 62-32 Thursday. The Irish played Hemingford Tuesday for a spot in the state tournament.

St. Pat’s 2816205—69
