Senior golfers lead Gothenburg this spring
Anchored by four senior letter winners returning from last year’s team, the 2014 Gothenburg boys golf team looks to sail on the ship of success.
Having golfers with experience means a great deal, head coach Don Graham said.“They know what to expect and their nerves should be out of the way,” he said. “That allows them to play golf instead of worrying about what’s surrounding them.”
In addition to his seniors, Graham says he has younger players looking to get better in their second season with the team.
“We have an opportunity to improve and that’s what I am looking for,” Graham said.
He noted that this past summer, with other options such as camps or jobs, his golfers didn’t play very much.
“To play at a high level it takes more than the two-and-a-half month season,” Graham said. “It’s hard to turn it on for a meet when you don’t play and learn to cope with difficulties.”
However, to improve on their scoring, he said he plans on his team concentrating on the short game.
“You can knock off one or two strokes by scoring from around the green,” Graham said.
From a Southwest Conference standpoint Broken Bow lost a lot of kids but Graham said he still looks at them as the favorite.
However, he admitted he doesn’t worry about other schools much.
He concentrates on his team.
“Golf is different because it’s an individual game played as a team sport,” he said. “All I can control is what our kids do. I have to try and get my kids to play better golf.”
The Swedes open the season at the North Platte Invite Friday at 9 a.m.
He’s expecting his seniors to lead the team in a chilly and tough tournament, Graham said.
“It’s an early tournament and it’s always cold,” he said. “I’m hoping we can play decent golf to feel good about ourselves moving forward.”
