GHS student to earn Eagle Scout Sunday

Curtis Andres, a Gothenburg High School senior, will receive an Eagle Scout Award.

Andres will be presented with scouting’s high honor Sunday at the Cozad Elks Club.

Andres is the son of Sharon and Bill Andres of Cozad and the grandson of Shirley Booth and the late James Booth of Brady, and Judy and Morrie Andres of Cozad.

He’s a member of Troop 1189 which is chartered by the Cozad Elks Club. His scoutmaster is Greg Rasmussen.

To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, Andres had to earn 21 merit badges and show leadership by planning, developing and completing a community service project.

For his project, he erected three flagpoles at the Welcome Garden on the corner of 7th Street and Avenue E in Cozad.

There, the Cozad Tourism Board and Chamber of Commerce of Cozad can display the United States flag, the Nebraska flag and the P.O.W. flag.

Andres researched flagpoles, obtained permits, approval, donations of funds and planned and erected the flagpoles with help from members of Troops 1189 of Cozad and 177 of Gothenburg and his family.

During his seven years with his troop, Andres has served as senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader and instructor.

He has also worked three years on staff at Boy Scout Camp Hansen at Kirwin, KS, as a trail-to-eagle counselor for younger scouts.

In school, Andres has been active in cross country, track, FFA and choir.

Andres has also been on the honor roll and competed at a State FFA Convention in welding. He has also received awards at district music contest.

In addition to scouting, Andres is involved in the Gothenburg Evangelical Free Church senior high youth group and Dare to Share.

Andres plans to pursue a college career in auto technology after graduation.

His hobbies include working on cars, soccer and hunting.

The rank of Eagle is earned by less than 4% of all youth who join Boy Scouts.
