Delegates selected for Girls, Boys State
Delegates have been selected for the annual Cornhusker Boys and Girls State that is sponsored by the Nebraska Department of the American Legion and Auxiliary.
Selected as delegates are MaKaela Franzen, daughter of Bryce Franzen of Gothenburg and Tia Britten of Brady, and Connor Schwanz, son of Elaine Smith and Kevin Schwanz, both of Gothenburg.
Rebecca Riley, daughter of Brian and Jaimi Riley of Gothenburg, is the Girls State alternate. The Boys State alternate is Tanner Schwanz, son of Mark and Annette Borchardt of Gothenburg.
Boys State and Girls State are scheduled for June 1-7 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The programs offer training in the functional aspects of citizenship. The purpose is to teach the youth of today constructive attitudes toward the American form of government.
The delegates study local, county and state government. They do this by setting up their own miniature city, county and state governments and administer them according to the rules and procedures set by Nebraska’s laws.
Other activities include legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, mock trials and debating. The participants also receive instruction in parliamentary procedure.
The mornings and early afternoons are given over to the educational program and the functioning of the various governmental offices.
In the late afternoon, participants are encouraged to participate in a varied program of recreational activity. A schedule of competition is arranged in the suitable sports. Band, chorus and newsletter staff are also options. An interesting program is arranged for the evening.
Nationwide, over 40,000 youths are expected to participate in similar programs in 49 states.
