Physics students compete in catapult event
The physics class at Brady High School competed April 30 in the third annual catapult competition at Arthur.
The goal of the trebuchet competition is to build a machine that will launch a 16-pound bowling ball the furthest distance in three tries, said physics teacher Tony Munter.
The Brady physics class built and competed with the original model and design of trebuchet two years ago. “We modified this design to try to improve our distance,” he said. Building a trebuchet blends several scientific disciplines including engineering and physics.
This competition also places an importance on working together in a group setting and solving open-ended problems that include scientific inquiry, Munter said. Highlights of the competition were communicating and observing trebuchet models from other regional schools and programs.
