Hazardous waste collection planned
The Lexington Area Solid Waste Agency (LASWA), the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program and area volunteers are offering free household hazardous waste collection on Friday, Aug. 29.
The funds awarded to LASWA will be used to provide household hazardous waste collections across the region it serves. Waste collection will occur on Friday, Aug. 29, at the following sites:
Gothenburg—City maintenance facility, 2:30-4 p.m.
Lexington—City Service Building, 8:30-10 a.m.
Cozad—recycling and disposal site, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Items that will be collected at these household hazardous waste collections will include yard and garden chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, flammables, paints and thinners, auto products, used oil, antifreeze, household products and cleaning chemicals, mercury, batteries (auto, lead acid and/or rechargeable, titanium, cadmium and nickel halide), florescent light bulbs, computers and monitors for computers.
Only items from household use will be accepted, no commercial, industrial or farm chemicals. No infectious waste and needles, radioactive waste, asbestos, oil or paint containing PCB’s. No high school labs, appliances, construction waste and tires.
Materials should be delivered to collection sites in sturdy, disposable containers labeled according to contents and no larger than five gallon or 50 pounds. The HHW program reserves the right to reject any materials.
