Edwin Schmeeckle, 70 - October 27, 2013

Edwin “Ed” Arthur Schmeeckle, 70, of Gothenburg passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
Services will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Gothenburg American Lutheran Church, 1512 Ave. G, with the Rev. Tom Wilson and Lonna Grabenstein, PMA, officiating. Interment will be conducted at a later date at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
A visitation will be conducted on Wednesday (today), from 1 to 8 p.m. at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg with family present from 5 to 8 p.m., and Thursday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Schmeeckle was born Sept. 7, 1943, at Lexington, son of Clarence and Marcia (Fleharty) Schmeeckle.
He joined the U.S. Air Force on April 2, 1964, and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant on April 1, 1968.
On Sept. 15, 1969, he married Connie Jensen at Reno, NV. To this union two sons were born.
In 1970, he opened the Conoco Station which he ran until 1973, and in 1973, he opened his own truck and trailer sales business, Schmeeckle’s Repair. In the 1980s, Gothenburg Truck and Equipment was created and is currently known as T.E.S. for Truck and Equipment Sales.
?Schmeeckle was an active member of the NHRA for many years, and was known to all his racing friends as “Fast Ed.” He was able to make his last run on Sept. 7, 2013.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Clarence and Marcia Schmeeckle; a brother, Dale Schmeeckle.
Survivors include: his wife, Connie Schmeeckle of Gothenburg; his sons—John D. (Jill) Schmeeckle and Alan P. (Lynette) Schmeeckle, all of Gothenburg; brothers—Gary Schmeeckle of Powell, WY, and Carl (June) Schmeeckle of Gothenburg; six grandchildren; numerous extended family members.
Memorials are suggested to the Racers for Christ or donor’s choice.
