Loel Nichols, 76 - January 29, 2015

Loel Dee “Grumpy” Nichols, 76, of Gothenburg passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at Goth­enburg.
Services were conducted at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel on Monday, Feb. 2, with the Rev. Larry Viter officiating. Inurnment took place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Nichols was born April 5, 1938, at Gothenburg, son of James and Edna Beth (Lichty) Nichols.
He grew up at Gothenburg and graduated from Gothenburg High in 1956. He attended Kearney State College for a semester before enlisting with the United States Marines where he served his country from February 1957 to February 1960.
On June 14, 1957, he was united in marriage to Verna Geiken at Gothenburg. To this union, four children were born.
Nichols and his family had resided at Gothenburg, Memphis, TN, and Santa Anna, CA. He was employed with the U.S. Post Office for 30 years and also drove truck for Paulsen Inc.
?He had served as a city councilman for numerous years and was a member of the fire department, a card club, an usher at church and drove a school bus.
?Nichols enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf, according to family members, and was a coach for little league and an umpire for softball and Legion ball games.
?He was preceded in death by: his parents, James and Edna; two brothers-in-law.
?Survivors include: his wife, Verna M. Nichols of Gothenburg; sons—Jeffrey (Wanda) Nichols, Mark Nichols and Mike Nichols; a daughter, Teresa Nichols; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
