Edward Sokol, 57 - September 13, 2015

Edward “Ed” Sokol, 57, of Minatare, originally of Gothenburg, passed away Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha.
Memorial services took place on Friday, Sept. 18, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff with the Rev. Jonathan Sorensen officiating.
Sokol was born Feb. 22, 1958, at Gothenburg to Leonard and Bonnie (Shaw) Sokol.
He graduated from Gothenburg High School, and received his bachelor’s degree from Kearney State, later receiving his master’s degree in counseling from Chadron State College.
Sokol was united in marriage to Paula Schwartzkopf on Oct. 3, 1987, at Cozad. To this union, two children were born. The couple resided at North Platte.
He began his teaching career in 1996 at Holyoke, CO, where he taught elementary special education and coached volleyball and junior high track.
Sokol and his family moved to the valley in 1999 where he continued teaching elementary special education and coaching volleyball at Minatare Schools. He then taught elementary special education and coached junior high football at Hay Springs for three years before returning to Minatare to continue teaching.
?He enjoyed horse races and fishing, and was very passionate about teaching and loved his students, according to family members. His family was also an important part in his life and he was always there for his children and grandchildren.
Sokol was preceded in death by: his parents, Leonard and Bonnie; a sister, Barbara Nielsen.
Survivors include: his wife, Paula; his children—Amanda Jo (Justin) Hopkins and Jakob Edward (Sadie) Sokol; a sister, Mary (David) Nova; his mother- and father-in-law, Donna (Allan) Schwartzkopf; grandchildren—Kinsley and Lukas; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Memorials are suggested to the First State Bank in Scottsbluff where a fund has been established.
