Eugene Burkhead, 83 - October 15, 2014

Eugene “Gene” Burkhead, 83, of Overton passed away Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at Good Samaritan Society, St. John’s in Kearney.
Services took place on Monday, Oct. 19, at Grace Lutheran Church of Lexington with the Revs. Josh Stibb and John Goss­wein officiating. Burial with full military honors was conducted at the Overton Cemetery.
Burkhead was born Nov. 22, 1931, at Oakdale to Raymond and Emma (Newton) Burkhead. He was a 1951 graduate of Kearney High School.
He served his country with the United States Army from June 2, 1953, until his honorable discharge on May 11, 1955.
Burkhead then went on to further his education at Milford Trade School earning his associate’s degree in electronics.
On Dec. 21, 1958, he was united in marriage to Shirley Stine at Hope Lutheran Church near Smithfield. To this union, two children were born.
He and his wife resided at Chadron from May of 1959 until December of 1959, where he serviced televisions. In 1960, they moved to Cambridge where he was co-owner of Cambridge TV & Appliance. While living at Cambridge, he served as president of the chamber of commerce and was a member of the Lion’s Club and a volunteer fireman.
Burkhead and his family moved to Valentine in October of 1965 until April of 1966, where he serviced television sets. The family then moved to Overton in 1966, where he was the associate engineer at Plectron for 17½ years.
Overton was a wonderful place to live and raise their family, family members said. He was active as a volunteer fireman from 1966 until 1984, serving as first aid captain for 13 years. He completed his EMT training and taught CPR for six years including two years at Overton Public Schools.
?In 1979, he was awarded the Nebraska Rescue and Emergency Care Association Award. He was also recognized for his involvement in training and equipping the rescue squad and teaching CPR in the community, an honor he was proud of, as well as serving several years on the town board.
Burkhead’s hobbies included camping, hunting and fishing. He was proud of the fact he earned two Master Angler awards, however his greatest enjoyment was attending his grandsons’ activities and being with his family, according to family members.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lexington since 1966. He was baptized and joined the church on Dec. 20, 1959, at Chadron.
Burkhead was preceded in death by: his parents, Raymond and Emma; a brother, John; sister, Darlene Johnston.
Survivors include: his wife of 57 years, Shirley Burkhead of Overton; his son, Dale (Jerri) Burkhead of Gothenburg; his daughter, Nancy (Scott) Davenport of Overton; five grandchildren—Matthew (Nicole) Davenport and Tyler Davenport, all of Overton, Aaron (Mia) Johnson of Gothenburg, Seth (Kelsey) Johnson of Ravenna and Jake Lanini of Lincoln; a sister, Phyllis (Merlin) Neeman of Gibbon; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
