John Schlake, 86 - October 31, 2015

John L. Schlake, 86, of Gothenburg passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
Services will take place at the American Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Interment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Schlake was born April 20, 1929, at Jansen to John and Clara (Eisner) Schlake. He grew up on a farm west of Plymouth, and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1946.
Following high school, he worked as a pattern maker at Dempster Foundry in Beatrice.
On Sept. 3, 1948, he married Elaine Schmidt at Jansen. To this union, two sons were born, LaMonte in 1954 and Leslie in 1955.
In 1952, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, where his wife joined him until his service was complete. They then moved back to Beatrice in 1954.
Schlake was employed with Howell Lumber where he worked until he was transferred to Gothenburg as the manager of Howell Lumber in 1958.
He built, co-owned and operated Country Side Bowling Lanes until he began Schlake Construction in 1962. He was proud that it has become a three-generation company, according to family members.
?Schlake was a member of the American Legion, Elks, Jaycees, dance clubs, a golf club and bowling leagues.
?He enjoyed working, dancing, traveling, playing cards, Husker football and bowling, fellowship at happy hour and polka music, the family said.
Schlake was preceded in death by: his parents, John and Clara; a son, Leslie Schlake; a sister, Frieda Butt; two brothers—Clarence Schlake and Arnold Schlake; his beloved dog, Spunky.
Survivors include: his wife of 67 years, Elaine Ruth Schmidt of Gothenburg; his son, LaMonte (Darla) Schlake of Gothenburg; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
