Betty Jensen, 90 - December 05, 2015

Ione “Betty” Slack Jensen, 90, of Kearney, formerly of Gothenburg, passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Kearney.
Services will be take place at the First United Methodist Church of Gothenburg on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Joel Plisek officiating. Interment will be at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
A visitation will be conducted at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg on Friday, Dec. 11, from 1 to 8 p.m. with family members present from 5 to 7 p.m.
Jensen was born Oct. 4, 1925, at the Will Schick place on Fox Creek to Forrest and Blanch (Weismann) Grunden.
She grew up on farms north of Curtis and attended schools in Frontier and Lincoln Counties. She graduated from Nebraska School of Agriculture (NSA) at Curtis in May of 1943. She taught elementary school in Lincoln County from 1943 to 1945.
On Dec. 26, 1944, she married Sanford “John” Arville Slack. The couple resided on a farm 22 miles south of Maxwell. In August of 1959, they moved to a farm three miles west of Gothenburg. Her husband passed away Aug. 28, 1985.
On April 17, 1990, she married Aksel Jensen. She continued to live on the farm west of Gothenburg until Oct. 4, 2003, when she moved to Northridge Retirement Community in Kearney.
Jensen was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women’s Society where she served as a leader for several years. She was also a member of the LC Extension Club.
She enjoyed gardening, loved flowers, and for many years had huge gardens where she canned the vegetables, according to family members. She also enjoyed cooking and baking and trying new recipes, playing cards, embroidering, square dancing and traveling.
?Jensen was very involved in operating the family ranch and farm. She loved nature and had a great respect for the land and enjoyed taking care of the cattle, family stated.
She was preceded in death by: her first husband, Sanford (John) Slack; her parents, Forrest and Blanch; a son, John F. Slack; sister, Audrey Krone; brother-in-law, Ed Krone; her brother, Harold Grunden; eight brothers-in-law and eight sisters-in-law.
Survivors include: her husband, Aksel V. Jensen; her three daughters—Janice (Don) Gaudreault of Keystone, Diane (Bruce) Johnson of Eaton, CO, and Sandra (Neil) Hawley of Garden City, KS; daughter-in-law:, Paula Slack of Seward; step-daughters—Jane (Gary) Marshall of Fresco, TX, and Carol (Jim) Voss of Running Springs, CA; 11 grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Harvey (Myrna) Grunden and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Slack Phillips; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Gothenburg and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson research.
