Ryan Groene, 38 - February 10, 2016

Ryan Groene, 38, of Gothenburg passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, at his home in Gothenburg following a courageous battle with cancer.
A fellowship gathering and Celebration of Life service was conducted at the Gothenburg High School on Sunday, Feb. 14.
Groene was born May 11, 1977, at Fremont, the son of Robin and Cathy (Vakiner) Groene.
He grew up at Howells and earned his bachelor of science degree in education at Wayne State College, and his master of arts degree in educational administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
On Aug. 5, 2000, he married Ashley Mues at Arapahoe. To this union, two children were born—Lunden and Beck.
Groene taught science and coached at Fort Calhoun Community School from 2001 to 2008, and was the junior high principal and curriculum director at Gothenburg Public Schools from 2008 to 2016.
He was a member of the NSEA, NCSA and was active with the NSAA as a state track official for 15 years. He was also a Gothenburg youth softball coach and attended the Crossing Fellowship.
Groene enjoyed spending time with his family, weekend getaways, time in the mountains and evening drives, according to family members. He liked everything football, especially the Huskers, Buffaloes and Denver Broncos. He also enjoyed attending sporting events, hiking in the Rocky Mountains and boating on the lake.
?He was preceded in death by: his grandparents, Elmer and Lila Groene, and Clifford and Alice Vakiner; his mother-in-law, Vicki Mues.
Survivors include: his wife, Ashley Groene of Gothenburg; his daughter, Lunden Groene; his son, Beck Groene; parents, Robin and Cathy Groene of Howells; three sisters—Brenda (Dave) Hegemann of Howells, Lisa (Tom) Holoubek of Clarkson and Tara Groene of Estes Park, CO; his parents-in-law, Noel Mues and Charlavee McCoy; brother-in-law, Brandon (Cherl) Mues of Fremont; nieces and nephews; numerous extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested for his children’s education.
