Horst Tobaben, 87 - July 16, 2016

Horst Tobaben, 87, of Eustis passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016, at the Elwood Care Center.
Services were conducted on Tuesday, July 19, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Eustis with Kathy Gundell, PMA, officiating. Burial with military honors took place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Tobaben was born on March 13, 1929, at Hamburg, Germany, to Fredrick Boehm and Emma Wenck. His mother later married Henry Tobaben in Germany, who adopted him. The family made the journey to Ellis Island in 1932 when he was three years old.
He graduated from Eustis High School and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1948.
On Oct. 13, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Poppe at the Salem Church southeast Eustis.
The couple resided on a farm site south of Eustis until 1961, when they moved to Eustis.
In 1961, he went to work at Monroe Auto in Cozad, retiring after 32 years.
Tobaben enjoyed spending time on the family farm, having coffee with friends and traveling with his wife after retirement, according to family members.
?He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Eustis, the American Legion and was a past Chaplain at the American Legion Post in Eustis. He was also actively involved with the Ostomy Association of Kearney.
Tobaben was preceded in death by: his parents, Henry and Emma; his wife, Marilyn.
Survivors include: his daugh­ter, Lori (Kevin) Welsch of Leigh; three sons—David (Kim) of Gothenburg, Doug (Sue) of Murray and Wendell (Deborah) of Cozad; eight grandchildren—Andrea, Rachel, Hillary, Matthew, Joshua, Jeremy, Stephanie and Kristin; 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established.
