Marorie Smith, 87 - August 17, 2016

Marjorie Ruth Smith, 87, of Wisconsin passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at Heritage Manor in Elroy, WI.
Burial service will take place at a later date.
Smith was born on a family farm near Eddyville on Nov. 5, 1928, the daughter of Claude E. and Clara Mae (Ostrand) Smith.
She grew up in Custer County on a farm along the South Loup River near Georgetown, attending a rural school and the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis.
Smith taught school and worked on a neighbor’s farm until she enlisted and served 10 years with the U.S. Navy as a weather observer/forecaster. Her last post was in Hawaii before moving to Indianapolis, IN, to attend Butler University. Help from a G.I. Bill and working nights as a desk clerk made it possible for her to attend school and earn her undergraduate degree.
After graduation she was employed at the San Diego Zoo and then began a 13-year career teaching English/reading to junior and senior high school students.
Family ties and a sense of adventure that lived inside of her all her life brought her back to Nebraska to the motel/restaurant business in 1975, according to family members. The motel and restaurant were sold by 1984 when she became kitchen manager of the Gothenburg Area Senior Center, then a public benefits specialist at West Central Nebraska Agency on Aging in North Platte, retiring in 2001.
?Her interests through the years included books, writing, poetry, conversation, painting, flying, hiking, trips with sister “Looie,” and camping with relatives, friends and anyone else who could back the camper into its spot, stated the family. Her bucket list was long but walking the Appalachian Trail was one of few that didn’t get checked off.
