Bruce Swanson, 70 - June 02, 2017

Bruce L. Swanson, 70, of rural Holdrege, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 2, 2017, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
Services were conducted on Tuesday, June 6, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege with the Rev. Kenton Birtell officiating. Burial was at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege with Military Honors provided by members of the United States Army Funeral Honors Team.
Swanson was born Nov. 28, 1946, at Holdrege, the second of four children born to Francis Edward and Betty Lou (Hubbard) Swanson. He attended Holdrege Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1965. He then pursued higher education at Kearney State College and Hastings Community College.
On June 13, 1966, he enlisted with the United States Army, and was stationed in Germany for three years. On March 14, 1969, he was honorably discharged.
He was united in marriage to Alice Ann Peterson on Feb. 3, 1968. To this union, three children were born.
The family made their home on a farm southeast of Holdrege, where Swanson was engaged in his life’s passion of farming. He loved being outdoors, was proud of his lawn and spent many hours in his garden, according to family members.
Swanson also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and taking walks with his dog, Bentley, the family stated, as well as going to morning coffee in Funk and attending Fit Farmers at the YMCA.
?He was a faithful member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, where he served in many capacities including past Sunday school teacher, church council member, committees and as an usher. He was also a member of the R-7 School Board, Funk Lions and the COOP Equity Board.
Swanson was preceded in death by: his father, Francis Swanson; father-in-law and mothers-in-law—Quinten Peterson, Leona Peterson and Wilma Peterson.
Survivors include: his wife of 49 years, Alice Ann Swanson of Holdrege; his three children—Amy (Kelly) Johnson of Grand Island, Darrin (Lori) Swanson of Holdrege and Maria (Garth) Andersen of Gothenburg; eight grandchildren—Austin (Reinette) Swanson of Olathe, KS, Lex and Eli Swanson of Holdrege, Garret, Walker and Jacque Johnson of Grand Island and Neligh and Gage Andersen of Gothenburg; his mother, Betty Swanson of Holdrege; a brother, Clyde Swanson of Holdrege; two sisters—Janice (Ed) Erickson of Holdrege and Kathy (Dave) Boyer of Norfolk; brother-in-law, Daniel (Hulda) Peterson of Holdrege; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives.
Memorials are suggested to the Bethel Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
