James Hunke, 88 - August 30, 2017

James “Jim” C. Hunke, 88, of Cozad passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017, at Omaha.
Mass of the Christian Burial took place on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial with Military Honors was at the Cozad Cemetery.
Hunke was born July 4, 1929, at West Point to John and Theresa (Kaup) Hunke. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1947.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and proudly served during the Korean War.
On Nov. 28, 1953, he married Sharalyn Van Dyke at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Lexington. The couple resided at Lexington before making their home in Cozad to raise their seven children.
Hunke farmed, built homes and was employed as a manager at Paulsen Inc. until his retirement.
He was a faithful member of Christ the King Catholic Church, volunteered his time for church groups and was active with The Knights of Columbus.
Hunke enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and spending time with family and friends, according to family members. He had a personality that was contagious to those who met him.
?He was preceded in death by: his parents; John and Theresa; his wife, Sharalyn; a brother, Larry Hunke.
?Survivors include: his children—Chris (Deb) Hunke, Cindy (Lane) Kinnan and Matt (Lisa) Hunke, all of Cozad, Steve (Trudi) Hunke of Corona, CA, Deb (Bob) Gentleman of Omaha, Patti (Theron) Kuhn of Elkhorn, Marcia (Brad) Keller of Eustis; a sister, Ann (Paul) McKee of Oxnard, CA; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
A memorial has been established.
