Mary Hicken, 75 - December 24, 2008
Mary Lorraine Hicken, 75, of Grand Island, formerly of the Gothenburg area, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services were held on Monday, Dec. 15, at the American Lutheran Church at Gothenburg with the Rev. Matthew Groenke officiating. Burial took place at the American Lutheran Cemetery at Gothenburg.
Hicken was born on April 29, 1933, to Rudolph and Maggie Fecht of Elm Creek.
She was baptized, confirmed and married at the American Lutheran Church of Gothenburg, and was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Grand Island.
Hicken attended Rural School E12 and high school in Elm Creek. She received her bachelor’s degree in education at Kearney State College, and was just three hours short of her master’s degree, when she was advised by her doctor to retire due to an aneurism.
?She had taught at many rural schools in Gosper, Dawson and Hall counties, the last school being Engleman Elementary in Grand Island.
?On Oct. 17, 1954, she was united in marriage to Melvin Hicken.
?Hicken enjoyed her family as well as teaching, music, singing, gardening and flowers, according to family members. She also enjoyed being a seamstress, pianist, singer and scouting leader.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Melvin; her parents, Rudolph and Maggie; two sets of grandparents; brothers—Clayton, Richard, Kenneth and Harold; sisters—Rose Marie and Shirley.
Survivors include: her daughter, Violet Crouch of Marquette; her son, William (Kimberly) Hicken of Grand Island; four sisters—Pat Hird of Litchfield, Martha Downs of Carthage, MO, Linda Chandler of Council Bluffs, IA, and Clara Erman of Cozad; two brothers—Steve Fecht of Columbus and Garrell Fecht of Axtell; sister-in-law, Karen Smith; brother-in-law, Garry Hicken; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
