Mearl McNeal, 87 - December 24, 2008
Mearl Allen McNeal, 87, of Gothenburg died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Stone Hearth Estates in Gothenburg.
Services were held on Friday, Dec. 19, at Stone Hearth Estates. Interment took place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
McNeal was born at Maxwell on Jan. 9, 1921. His parents, Clarence and Daphne (Tirrill) McNeal, later moved the family to a farm northeast of Gothenburg. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1940.
The fall after his high school graduation, he enlisted in the Navy where he served six years, one month and nine days as a boatswain’s mate first class. As a veteran of World War II, he was active in the American Legion and served as the Commander for the VFW.
He was married to Dorothy Delores Danks from 1945 to 1961. To this union, three children were born—Signe, Scott and Sheryl.
In 1964, he was united in marriage to Merle Ruth Fallert Barber.
McNeal was employed at the North Platte Post Office for 27 years and, after retiring, moved to a country home west of Gothenburg. In 1998, he moved to Cozad to be near his sister, Iris Matz, and brother, Leigh McNeal of Callaway.
?He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lexington.
?McNeal enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and in his younger years, camping, according to family members.
?He was preceded in death by: his parents, Clarence and Daphne Tirrill McNeal; his first wife, Dorothy Dolores; his second wife, Merle Ruth; a sister, Donna Stevens; son-in-law, Clark Sullivan; brothers-in-law—Delmar Matz and Bob Stevens of Eustis.
Survivors include: his three children—Signe (Chris) McLoy of Cozad, Scott McNeal and Sheryl (Clark) Sullivan, all of St. George, UT; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, Leigh (Marilyn) McNeal; his sister, Iris Matz.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
