Don Fecht, 74 - November 26, 2008
Don Bruce Fecht, 74, of Gothenburg died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
Services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Gothenburg with the Revs. Randall Dilts and Robert Litzenburger officiating. Burial took place at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Fecht was born on Nov. 25, 1933, at Harlan County to Johann and Ethel (Shaffer) Fecht. He grew up and spent most of his life in Gothenburg. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1952.
He was a hard working family man, according to family members, beginning work at the age of 12. He worked for Ernie VanWey at the Sun Theater, where he ran the projector for 25 years. He also worked for Art Polak at the Jack and Jill grocery store, then worked at Lepp and Osterloh for 30 years. Following his retirement, he worked at Peterson’s Supermarket for approximately five years.
On Feb. 15, 1953, he was united in marriage to Bernadine Joy Rasmussen at the United Methodist Church in Gothenburg.
Fecht was a member of the United Methodist Church for 55 years, serving on several committees. He also served on the Planning & Zoning Commission as chairman in 1985, and also as a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church.
He was an avid Husker football fan, and took pride in having an exceptional vegetable garden, said family members. He enjoyed reading Louis L’Amour books, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Fecht was preceded in death by: his parents, Johann and Ethel; sister-in-law, Marilyn (John) Fecht; brothers-in-law—Harlan Ackerman and Mearl Wallace.
?Survivors include: his wife, Bernadine; a daughter, Lori (Russ) Emken of Brady; two sons—Hal (Kendra) Fecht and Tim Fecht, both of Gothenburg; grandchildren—Jori (Charles) Jones of Groton, CT, Zachariah (Trenda) Fecht of Ashby, Jacob (Julie) Fecht of Gothenburg, Shannon (Matt) Schwartz of Hastings, Braxton Fecht of North Platte, Elijah Fecht of Omaha, Zane Fecht of Gothenburg and Kolton Emken of Brady; great-grandchildren—Taylor, Sydney, Hunter and Archer Jones of Groton, CT, Gunnar Fecht of Gothenburg, Grady Fecht of Ashby, Xavier, Taegan and Layla Schwartz of Hastings; sisters—Corinne (Carol) Sappingfield of Gothenburg, Bonnita (Dennis) Thompson of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Lorene (Dan) Billington of Folkston, GA, brothers—Keith (Betty) Fecht of Gothenburg and John Burrell Fecht of Yakima, WA.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church, the Brady Community Church and the American Cancer Society.
