June Doris Gibbs, 93 - October 01, 2009
Brady native June Doris Gibbs, 93, died on Sept. 26, 2009.
Services were Oct. 1, at the Brady Methodist Church in Brady with internment next to her husband Roland in the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Gibbs was born in Brady on June 4, 1916, to Henning Frank and Elsie Amelia Blede. She graduated from Brady High School and was a longtime pianist at Brady Methodist Church.
She married Roland Prince Gibbs on Sept. 11, 1938. They were the parents of three children.
By 1942 they had moved to Wichita, KS, where they both worked in the aircraft industry in support of the war effort.
During her children’s early school years Gibbs worked in the home. She loved flowers, baking and decorating the house for holidays, family members said. Her decorated Christmas cookies were always a favorite.
When her children reached high school age, she worked in the cosmetic department in J.C. Penny’s Department store in Wichita.
The family attended Epworth Methodist Church in Wichita for many years where she and Roland helped in MYF and June was a part of the W.S.C.S. She continued to support the church even after she moved to Buckner, MO.
Gibbs enjoyed painting and poetry. With the help of her daughter and her great grand daughter she published two volumes of poetry. She painted scenes from her childhood on canvas, but also on hand saws, metal farm equipment seats, thimbles, trunks and most recently cigar boxes.
Gibbs was preceded in death by her husband Roland, her parents and her two brothers, Harold and Harlan.
She is survived by: a daughter Pat (E. Dan) Weiskirch; son Bill (Martha) Gibbs; and daughter Penny (Royce) Elliott; grandchildren—Rob (Amy) Weiskirch, Rose (Craig) Englis, Billy (Amy) Gibbs and Dorian, Dustin and Devin Elliott; great-grandchildren Robyn and Paige Weiskirch, Isaac, Micah and Catherine Gibbs; step-great-grandchildren Logan and Chelsea Englis.
The family requests that memorials be given to the Gideon Bible Society in the name of Roland and June Doris Gibbs.
