Vernon Beardsley, 67 - October 08, 2008
Vernon Lee “Bear” Beardsley, 67, of Sterling, CO, formerly of Gothenburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at Sterling.
A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. on Friday Oct. 3, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Sterling. Burial took place at Riverside Cemetery at Sterling.
Beardsley was born May 13, 1941, to William Melvin and Thelma Jane (Radcliffe) Beardsley at Gothenburg. He was the youngest of six children and had attended school in Gothenburg.
Following high school, he worked for Block Trucking and Phillips “66” in Gothenburg.
He came to know and marry Kay Gaudreault while living in Gothenburg. To this union, six children were born.
Beardsley and his wife moved to Sterling where he was employed with the Butternut Bread Company. He worked for several bread companies during his 48-year career. The bread company changed its name over the years, from Butternut Bread to Old Home to Sara Lee. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed visiting, sharing stories and getting to know the customers he served, according to family members.
He was a loving husband who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, sharing their busy lives and attending their events and games, said family members. He also enjoyed playing Santa Claus for the Elks Club, St. Anthony’s and many schools and homes in the area.
?Beardsley’s favorite pastimes were vacations with his family, motorcycle riding, NASCAR racing, family reunions and old westerns, according to family members.
?He was preceded in death by: his parents, William and Thelma; two brothers—Maurice and Bernie; a sister, Winona Sedlacek.
Survivors include: his wife, Kay; three sons—Wally (Judy) and Gary (Kathy), all of Sterling, and J.R. (LaDawn) of Brighton; three daughters—Tracie (Ed) Byczkowski of Sterling, Julie (Brian) Dick of Sutherland, and Jenny (Mike) Scholz of Bennett CO.; a brother, Fred (Donna) of North Platte; a sister, Sarah Jane Parker of Hastings; 16 grandchildren—Casey, Randa, Bo, Haley and Alex, Kelly, Keri, Josh and Kevin, Jody and Aaron, A.J., Jake and Bryson, Emma and Noah; great-grandchild, Taylor; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Bear Beardsley memorial scholarship fund.
